1 June 2023, The UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States, in collaboration with the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) in UAE, conducted a dynamic four-day workshop focused on the Sendai Framework Monitor and Disaster Loss Accounting System. With a strong emphasis on data-driven decision-making and Sendai Framework implementation, the workshop aimed to improve the knowledge of monitoring the implementation, enhance disaster risk reduction governance, and equip participants with essential tools for effective DRR.

The comprehensive training workshop delved into various key aspects, providing participants with valuable insights and practical skills.

The participants gained a deeper understanding of the interconnections between the Sendai Framework, the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By recognizing these synergies, attendees discovered opportunities for integrated approaches to address pressing global challenges. The workshop emphasized the importance of DRR governance and the establishment of sound institutional frameworks at the country level. Participants explored best practices and strategies for effective implementation and coordination of DRR efforts.

A key focus of the workshop was the importance of monitoring Sendai Framework implementation. Participants received hands-on training on utilizing the Sendai Framework Monitor for reporting and delved into the process of determining terminologies and indicators, understanding their linkages to the SDGs, and exploring the designated timeframe for monitoring progress against global targets.

Moreover, the workshop underscored the critical need for disaggregated data on disaster losses. Attendees explored methodologies for collecting, documenting, and analyzing comprehensive data to enable meaningful analysis that informs decision-making on programmes and resources, ultimately contributing to more effective risk reduction.

The participants were trained on the Disaster Loss and Damage Database using the innovative "DesInventar-Sendai" system software. This advanced tool enables the systematic collection, documentation, and analysis of data on losses caused by disasters. Attendees gained practical expertise in utilizing the software, its application, and its importance in establishing the baseline for post-2015 monitoring of Sendai Framework implementation.

The workshop's collaborative and interactive sessions fostered knowledge sharing among participants, enabling them to strengthen their capacities in disaster risk reduction, emphasizing the power of data, Sendai Framework monitoring, and practical tools, fostering collaboration between UNDRR and NCEMA to drive progress in sustainable development and disaster resilience.
