Our work - Mami

Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR @HeadUNDRR

"I have had the privilege of serving with UNDRR since 2018 and I believe our mandate is central to everything the UN is working on. Our world is changing far more quickly than we ever anticipated.

The nature of our modern world means shocks, stresses and crisis brought about by the interaction between climate change, ecosystem fragility, unplanned urbanization, political or financial instability reverberate globally.

Disasters - where natural hazards negatively meet people - are coming faster, lasting longer and hitting harder. The people hit hardest are those who have done the least to cause these significant changes – the poorest.

UNDRR works at the intersection between understanding risk and risk impact: reducing disaster loss and preventing the emergence of new risk.

Nothing undermines development like a disaster. And there is no denying that disasters of any kind are expensive: to human life and economies. The world has been stuck in a vicious cycle of disaster > response > dependency > repeat.

But there are solutions: every US$1 invested in risk reduction and prevention can save up to US$15 in post-disaster recovery. Every US$1 invested in making infrastructure disaster-resilient saves US$4 in reconstruction.

We believe that risk can be reduced. We believe that disasters don’t have to devastate.

UNDRR sits at the centre of the UN system for reducing risk, convening and coordinating risk reduction activities towards a more resilient future, protecting gains made towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

We challenge our stakeholders and partners to think and act differently about disasters, shifting focus from picking up the pieces post disaster to risk-proofing the start of any development investment.

We also support Member States in implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, monitoring and reviewing progress. We promote stories and news about where risk reduction is working. And we curate knowledge and ideas from around the globe to contribute to our understanding of risk.

We have a core staff based in our headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and regional and liaison offices supporting Member States around the world to build a safer, more resilient future for all.

It’s a huge task.

We are a small organization , but we have a heart as big as our mandate."
