It is a joint initiative of United Nations organizations, international financial institutions, national and local governments, and non-governmental organizations engaged in disaster recovery, and seeking to transform disasters into opportunities for sustainable development.

IRP supports progress against Priority 4 of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

IRP works to advance the field of resilient recovery and build-back-better through three principal areas of work:

  • Convening a broad range of senior policymakers and practitioners to exchange experiences and facilitate discussion on opportunities and challenges in resilient recovery and building back better at the annual International Recovery Forum.
  • Enabling closer cooperation between development partners, international and regional organizations, and governments for disaster risk reduction and promoting and building capacity to achieve build-back-better outcomes.
  • Sharing knowledge, experiences, and lessons through its publications and its website.
