In its traditional role, media is an integral part of disaster risk reduction strategies allowing messages to reach a larger and wider audience. The potential of the contemporary media landscape offers unprecedented opportunities to amplify UNDRR messages to raise awareness, increase the understanding of disaster risk reduction and deepen the discussion on risk reduction.

But the media also has an important role as a stakeholder in DRR, holding governments to account against global commitments and reporting on multi-national deliberations. At the same time, countries often rely on the media to deliver early warning messages and reliable, trustworthy information.

World Broadcasting Unions project

UNDRR is working with public broadcasters around the world to deliver training and tools to inform and empower journalists in this role through the DRR Media Hub
