Introduction

UNDRR is participating in the 2022 edition of the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week, which is a key step on the road to COP27 in Egypt in November.

For this occasion, UNDRR is organizing a side event to increase the understanding and promote the important for integrated approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. The event supports the development of the Global goal on Adaptation (GGA) as an important mainstreaming opportunity.

The proposed event aims to showcase actionable, practicable, replicable and scalable integrated DRR and CCA approaches that will contribute to the GGA work programme. This will build on identified good practices, including integrated climate and disaster risk management being implemented in several countries in the LAC region. A whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach is the hallmark of these initiatives that will be a key highlight of the event.

Methodology / Session Type

The session has a total duration of 90 minutes, and will take place on 19 July from 10 to 11 AM (Dominican Republic AST) using a hybrid setting. The target audience are government officials and local authorities, as well as practitioners and technical experts on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and particularly on urban resilience, who are interested in learning  about progress in integrating climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction into national, sectoral and local planning, which are central to promoting and enhancing resilience at the local level in the framework of sustainable development.

Objectives

The Bali Agenda for Resilience, key outcome of the recent 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, calls for adopting integrated approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, identifying development of the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) as an important opportunity for integration.  To be ahead of the growing climate and disaster impacts and risks, we need to ensure interoperability of interventions and synergize initiatives, sectors and approaches at all levels and scales.

The proposed event aims to produce actionable, replicable, and scalable integrated DRR and CCA approaches that will contribute to the GGA Work Programme. This will build on identified good practices, including the comprehensive disaster and climate risk management that is being implemented in several LAC countries. A whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach is the hallmark of these initiatives that will be a key highlight of the event.
