Cities at the frontline: Highlights from the Resilience Initiative Africa Project

The global initiative Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) helps local governments to advance sustainable urban resilience by translating global, continental and national commitments into practical action at the local level. The initiative supports cities to better understand their risks, strengthen governance and planning systems, mobilize partners, and implement risk-informed actions that protect lives, livelihoods and development gains.

Under the Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA) project (2023-2026), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for Africa in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) funded by BMZ, supported 22 local governments across 11 countries to make progress along the MCR2030 Resilience Roadmap. The project built the technical capacities of 1,095 local government officials and stakeholders, contributing to more resilient urban governance for almost 20 million people.
