On 5 November 2022, UNDRR is launching the #GetToHighGround campaign under the umbrella of the World Tsunami Awareness Day in collaboration with the national and local governments. The campaign is launched globally with the symbolic walk along the tsunami and other hazards evacuation route to raise awareness. The launch is taking place in Mauritius, Quatre Souers in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre and Portugal, Sesimbra in partnership with the Municipal Civil Protection Office, Sesimbra City Hall. The walk, inclusive for everyone, will be an engaging event for all people to raise awareness of tsunami risk and what to do in case of an emergency.

UNDRR is co-organizing the event with partner countries aiming to strengthen support and bolster partnerships and solutions for a safe ocean resilient to all hazards. Citizens and communities are invited to participate in the symbolic walk of the evacuation route to further enhance the preparedness of coastal communities for tsunamis.

The campaign aims to activate citizens through a fun run or walk of the tsunami and other hazards evacuation route to raise awareness about reducing tsunami risk in communities, emphasising the importance of being prepared. The campaign encourages stakeholders to effectively transmit knowledge about resilience, foster a culture of early warning and early action, and raise awareness on how to minimise the risks posed by tsunamis and other coastal hazards. Access to high quality, readily available information is key to enhance awareness about early warning systems and reduce gaps in national dissemination mechanisms and local preparedness efforts across sectors and geographies.
