This paper by the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group outlines ways of increasing the application of ecosystem-based approaches to DRR. The G20 DRR Working Group aims to integrate risk reduction measures into public and private sector investment decisions and policy making to reduce existing risk, prevent the creation of new risk and, ultimately, build resilient economies, societies, and natural systems.

The following priorities are proposed and elaborated in the paper:

  • Integrate Eco-DRR across sectors through comprehensive risk governance and increased advocacy and leadership engagement
  • Enhance private and public investment in NbS, including in high-impact sectors for resilience
  • Consider NbS and hybrid approaches where possible to reduce stresses on infrastructure systems
  • Accelerate the application of Eco-DRR and NbS in build back better, including in humanitarian and emergency contexts
  • Exchange good practices on the application of Eco-DRR approaches for resilience, focusing on high-impact sectors
