Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.
This temporary position is for a period of six months and is located in the Global Risk Analysis and Reporting Unit of UNDRR in Geneva, and entails the coordination of the project related to the development and support of the drafting of the UN Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 (GAR 2022). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Unit.
Under the overall guidance of the Chief of Branch and the supervision of the Programme Management Officer at the P-4 level, the incumbent carries out the following duties and responsibilities:
Contributes to the development, implements and evaluates assigned programmes/projects, etc. in relation to the GAR 2022; monitors and analyses programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
On the basis of global risk assessment, contributes to the review and analysis of issues and trends related to disaster risk, and proposes relevant research activities and studies. Provides analysis on risk trends and patterns, progress and challenges in disaster risk reduction in the context of sustainable development and associated trade-offs and co-benefits.
Prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. Contributes to the drafting of the Global Assessment Report (GAR) and other relevant reports to present the global analysis of progress in implementing and monitoring of the Sendai Framework and the assessment of global risk.
Within delegated authority, provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., - including the GAR Advisory Board, and coordinating and managing partnerships / authors related to GAR 2022, and in particular to Parts I and III, to include proposing agenda topics, identify participants, prepare documents and presentations, etc.
Contributes to outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc. – including the GAR 2022 Call for contributing papers, selection of abstracts, paper development, peer review and finalisation; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
Participates in and represents UNDRR in processes and bodies related to core deliverables of the unit, including acting as the representative for the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Working Group Disasters and the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM) WG Disasters, the technical focal point of the UN Task Team on Inequalities, and providing inputs and follow-up to the guide on integration of DRR and Climate Change into Common Country Assessments and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks.
Contributes to activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
Supports the GAR Coordinating Lead Author and GAR Part Lead Authors and performs other duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in social sciences, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
Experience in disaster risk analysis and disaster risk reduction is required.
Experience in global secretariat functions, developing and managing partnerships, disaster data science and analytics and making presentations of scientific/statistical data to different audiences is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
This temporary position is for a period of six months. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.
