Background:

The International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) is a multi-disciplinary and multistakeholder platform to enable societies to increase their resilience to natural, technological and environmental disasters and to reduce associated environmental, human, economic and social losses. A range of United Nations organizations and international partners participate in cooperation with Governments and civil society organizations.

The implementation of the ISDR is supported by a secretariat lead by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction. The secretariat main functions are policy coordination, advocacy and information management, at the international and regional levels, to ensure synergy between disaster reduction strategies and those in the socio-economic and
humanitarian fields.

Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Head of the Communications Unit, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

• Manage UNISDR website information: ensure timely update of the content of the sites; assist the different units to create new and update existing web pages and databases; coordinate and centralize the posting of new information pertaining to notifications, new projects, meetings, new publications or products; supervise web site database updates; ensure application of content guides; contribute to user needs analysis for UNISDR websites.
• Produce or oversee production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information products (e.g. feature articles, background information, audio-visual materials etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and
coordinating design approval, web procedures and distribution.
• Prepare, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of stories and articles for inclusion in the website.
• Ensure implementation of information and communications work plans to promote priority issues and/or major events, including drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
• Monitor and analyze current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses.
• Initiate and sustain professional relationships with key constituencies.
• Act as an information and communications focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
• Participate in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
• Undertake activities to develop a social media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active social media outreach efforts and appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of social media coverage.
• Provide guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.
• Coordinate with UNISDR Information Management Unit on the implementation of innovative internet technologies, and dynamic content management strategies, in accordance with UNISDR
web strategy.
• Undertake additional communications and related tasks as may be required.

Qualifications:

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related
area.
Language: Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
