Writing Workshop towards finalization of the Djibouti national climate-informed DRR strategy and its action plan

UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States is organizing a Writing Workshop towards Finalization of the Djibouti National Climate-informed Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategy and its Action Plan.

The workshop will bring together members of the drafting committee formed by the General Secretariat for the Management of Disaster Risk within the Ministry of Interior of Djibouti after the conclusion of the national consultation process in December 2024. 

Background

Djibouti has faced significant losses due to natural hazards, highlighting the country's vulnerability. To mitigate these impacts, Djibouti developed its first National Disaster Risk Management Strategy in 2005 and established an institutional framework, including relevant laws and committees. The country is committed to international frameworks such as the Sendai Framework, the Paris Agreement, and the 2030 Agenda. To align with evolving challenges, Djibouti is updating its strategy, integrating disaster risk reduction (DRR) with climate change adaptation.

Objectives

• Finalize the updated National Disaster Risk Management Strategy.
• Review and refine the draft strategy developed through previous consultations.
• Ensure alignment with international frameworks and best practices.
• Strengthen intersectoral coordination and institutional capacity for DRR.

Expected outcome

A finalized version of the National Climate-informed DRR Strategy and its Action Plan, which will be presented to the Djiboutian government during a political validation workshop planned in April 2025.
