The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Kenya National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) jointly organize a workshop on Comprehensive Risk Management (CRM) to strengthen synergies between Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in Kenya.
Workshop objectives
The workshop seeks to enhance the capacities of the government of Kenya in developing and implementing coherent and integrated plans and strategies for climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk reduction (DRR). The workshop aims to enhance national capacities to develop and implement coherent and integrated plans and strategies and contribute to the breaking of institutional siloes, while fostering the protection of productive sectors from climate impacts, including due to increased hazard frequency and intensity.
More concretely, the workshop will:
- Convene key government representatives from ministries responsible for disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, and planning and finance, together with UN and international organizations and build capacity on key concepts related to CCA and DRR and its coherence.
- Motivate and empower leadership and staff across levels and communities to use gained knowledge to support their own decision-making effectiveness.
- Gain a stronger understanding of the benefits of CRM, integrated planning and inter-institutional cooperation amongst stakeholders.
- Strengthen coordination among key stakeholders and break down siloes.
- Streamline and advance the process of integrated disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation planning and promote the application of climate information for planning.
- Build the capacity of participants on how to develop/update/implement risk-informed and inclusive national plans/strategies e.g. National Adaptation Plans/National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) and Disaster Risk Management Strategies that encourage integrated climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction actions across all sectors at all levels.
Expected outcome
The workshop will result in a roadmap for enhanced integrated (CCA and DRR) planning and concrete ways to further priority measures and needs identified by participants more broadly. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
a) Describe the rationale, concepts and framework for disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and resilience.
b) Understand the concept and advocate for the use of a comprehensive risk management approach
c) Be able to identify entry points for DRR in NAP/NCCAP and CCA in DRR strategies
d) Promote stakeholder coordination and contribute to break siloes
e) Build a roadmap, including guiding principles (promoting prevention and addressing vulnerabilities to climate hazards), to ensure integrated DRR and CCA planning in Kenya.
