World Conference on Disaster Reduction: proceedings of the conference
The World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDR) proceedings include primary documents together with a summary on the thematic segment of the conference and includes:
- The Hyogo Declaration
- The Hyogo Framework for Action
The conference was structured in three segments: intergovernmental, thematic and public. It was a rich forum for exchanging views on many issues related to risk reduction, with the objective to reduce the loss of life and assets of populations in risk-prone areas. The Hyogo Framework for Action adopted by the conference provides valuable policy direction and practical guidance for the next decade across many areas related to risk management and disaster reduction.
It is supplemented by a CD-ROM that includes all documents from the WCDR that have been posted on the conference's website (http://www.unisdr.org/wcdr/). As such, this publication is a comprehensive reference for officials, researchers, practitioners in disaster risk management and prevention.
The WCDR, which took place in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan, from 18 to 22 January 2005, was a milestone in the progress the international community strives for in the broad areas of disaster risk reduction. Called for by the United Nations General Assembly and hosted by the Government of Japan, it brought together some 4,000 people from governmental and non-governmental bodies around the world, with participants from 168 States, 78 observer organizations, 161 NGOs and over 560 journalists.
