This paper presents the measures put forth at the Aichi/Nagoya International Conference 1993 on "Disaster management in metropolitan areas for the 21st century" addressing the promotion of disaster prevention and risk managements in metropolitan areas on the basis of an accurate risk assessment.
This paper is a summary of presentation by Mr. Shinjiro Mizutani, Chairman, Aichi/Nagoya International Conference on the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, 1993, made at the technical session "Natural disaster reduction: effects of disasters on modern societies" at the World Conference on Natural Disaster Reduction, Yokohama, Japan, 23-27 May 1994.
