Statement from SRSG Kamal Kishore on the glacier disaster that struck the Swiss village of Blatten and the importance of disaster risk reduction to saving lives and livelihoods.

From 21 to 23 May 2025, the municipalities of Funchal, Machico, and Ponta do Sol hosted the 12th edition of the National Meeting of Resilient Cities and Towns — a key event under the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative.

Ahead of WRRC on 3 June, IRP and partners hosted global events sharing good practices on recovery readiness, displacement, private sector resilience and finance - highlighting inclusive planning, collaboration and stronger systems to build back better.

The Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR) 2025, highlights how direct disaster costs have grown to approximately $202 billion annually, but that the true costs of disasters is over $2.3 trillion.

UNDRR and the CCRO Network previewed the ReMA tool at Geneva’s Risk-!n Conference, spotlighting private sector collaboration in disaster risk management. ReMA aims to benchmark and enhance enterprise resilience, with its launch set for GP2025 in June.

Nairobi, Kenya – 21 May, 2025 –Today, Kenya officially took a major step towards protecting lives and livelihoods from disasters through its national launch of the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative.

Ministers reaffirmed commitment to CSSI, agreed on concrete actions to advance school safety, including coordination, reporting, and budget planning. Youth voices and regional cooperation were central to the Forum hosted in Saint Lucia.

The two workshops in April and May supported cities to engage in fruitful exchanges of experience on the use of data, ISO certification, and urban resilience strategies and planning.
