UNDRR Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM)

SRSG: CLOSING OF THE STAKEHOLDER FORUM

14 May 2019, 15.00 – 16.30

Room 2, CCV

CLOSING REMARKS

Let me start by expressing my appreciation for the energy, enthusiasm and hard work of the panelists members of the UNDRR Stakeholder Engagement Mechanism (SEM) in making this innovative event a success.

As you know, we only officially launched the SEM in December 2018, as what can be almost called a pilot for inclusion and coherence, and it has exceeded our expectations.

Whilst I regret not having been able to join much of the discussions myself, my colleagues have kept me informed of the events and progress. And I have to say, I was impressed by the clear commitment, passion and openness to change the way we partner and collaborate as shown by participants at the Forum, from the highest levels of Government to local communities, private sector and academia.

In this regard, I would like to specifically welcome the Stakeholder Declaration, which is indeed an inspiring and encouraging call to action.

It is a clear example of the excellence that can flow from good collaboration, where people and organizations start looking beyond their immediate mandates to build inclusive and inspiring movements and partnerships.

I look forward to seeing the Declaration reflected in the outcome of the Global Platform, as well as in the upcoming high level political processes on SDGs and Climate Change over the course of 2019 and 2020.

Again, my sincere thanks to all stakeholders and partners for their commitment. I and my colleagues at UNDRR look forward to working closely with you in 2019 and beyond to ensure the achievement of disaster and climate risk resilient sustainable development.

Thank you.
