The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS organised, on 24 September 2020, a joint regional training on the monitoring of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The virtual workshop brought together 28 representatives of UN agencies, Resident Coordinators and their offices from 9 United Nations Country Teams across the Europe and Central Asia region.

The event was organised as part of efforts by UNDRR and UNDP to work closer together in driving the DRR and resilience agendas across the region; participants were welcomed to the training by Mr Octavian Bivol, UNDRR Regional Chief for Europe, and Ms Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of UNDP, and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS.

The training provided an opportunity for participants to better understand the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, its monitoring, synergies with the SDG reporting process and the role of the UN and country teams in supporting Member Countries in meeting global commitments.

Participants were introduced to the broad structures, priorities, and global targets of the Sendai Framework for DRR; explored the linkages between the SFDRR, the SDGs and other global processes, highlighting the relevance of the SFDRR monitoring for UNCTs. the training also offered an overview of the SFDRR Monitoring and assessment, focusing on the Sendai Targets and the reporting outcomes and opportunities. In this occasion the role of UNDRR and UNDP in supporting Member Countries and UNCTs was profusely explained through examples of UNDRR support to European and Central Asian countries, in different forms.

As a follow up, UNDRR will work closely with UN Country Teams to make full use of the monitoring indicators of the Sendai Framework in support of the UN Country Teams’ efforts around SDGs monitoring and the implementation of the country level UNSDCFs.  Additionally, UNDRR, in close collaboration with UNDP through its country presence, will support Member States and other UN agencies through training, capacity building, tailored workshops and information sessions.
