In order to echo the global launch of the World Campaign for Disaster Reduction on “Hospitals Safe from Disasters” that is organized by the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), with the support of the World Bank in Davos, Switzerland, in the context of the World Economic Forum, a regional launch of the campaign will be organized by UN/ISDR Asia & Pacific and WHO Regional Offices for South East Asia and Western Pacific on Friday 25 January 2008, 1300-1700, Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand.

The biennial World Campaign on Disaster Reduction aims at raising awareness and mobilizing political commitment to disaster risk reduction. Whilst traditionally led by the UN/ISDR, the 2008-2009 World Campaign on “Hospitals Safe from Disasters” will benefit from the World Health Organization (WHO)’s leadership, with the support of the UN/ISDR secretariat, the World Bank and UN/ISDR system partners.

The regional launch will be an opportunity for key regional partners involved in the issue of health and disaster risk reduction to develop a regional partnership and long-term strategy for safe hospitals, building on the existing successful initiatives that have been developed in the Asia and Pacific region, one of the most disaster-prone continents, for the coming two years and beyond, so as to enhance coordination and synergies on the subject at the regional level.
