MCR2030 Team Delivers In-Person Capacity Building in the State of Sao Paulo

"Capacity building workshop of the initiative ‘Making Cities Resilient 2030’ (MCR2030) for the assessment of municipal capacities for disaster resilience in the state of São Paulo". 

Under the guidance of the regional team for the Americas and the Caribbean Region of the Making Cities Resilient Initiative (MCR2030), and with the collaboration of the State of São Paulo Civil Defense, municipal representatives from 14 cities acquired practical knowledge on Disaster Risk Reduction, urban resilience and the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for cities. This workshop was directed to public servants from local governments in the State of São Paulo, including representatives from civil defense, health, environment, social assistance, urban planning, among other.

Mr. Clément Da Cruz, MCR2030 Technical Advisor, pointed that the workshop promoted the importance of effective climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, while aiming at increasing political commitment and social demand at the local level for disaster resilient urban development, increasing the engagement of local governments in São Paulo State to integrate disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into local development and planning. Its purpose was also to increase the capacity and commitment of urban planners, emergency and disaster managers, and decision makers to promote disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation through relevant systems, policies and processes.

As part of the activities to promote the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative in the State of São Paulo State the event, that took place on September 9th in Casa Militar de São Paulo, provided an opportunity for experts and local authorities to increase their technical capacities and served as a platform to share good practices and exchange in-depth knowledge.

As a result, 45 municipal officials are now trained and have the capacities to use of the MCR2030 resilience tools, support the development and implementation of local disaster risk reduction strategies aligned with national strategies and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. After the workshop, the State of São Paulo and its municipalities will continue to drive the development of a local resilience strategies, implementing the Scorecard self-assessment tool in at least 2 municipalities. As for the date, and framed in the UNDRR and Sao Paulo State partnership, 124 cities are already part of the MCR2030.
