A brief on the High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030: Participation and expectations

16 February 2023, In preparation for the upcoming High-Level Meeting (HLM) on the Midterm Review (MTR) of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States organized an online conference to brief the Sendai Framework National Focal Points, concerned parties, and stakeholders on the meeting and its objectives. The HLM is scheduled to take place on 18 and 19 May 2023 at the UN Headquarters in New York under the theme "Working Together to Reduce Risk for a Resilient Future."

The HLM will provide a platform for Member States, United Nations partners, and stakeholders to reflect on the findings and recommendations of the MTR of the Sendai Framework and formulate a forward-looking and risk-informed approach to better address systemic risk.

During the online conference, UNDRR ROAS presented the progress made so far in implementing the Sendai Framework and achieving its 7 targets and highlighted the recommendations and challenges that need to be addressed. The online conference also discussed the preparations, agenda, objectives, expected results, registration, and level of participation in the HLM, which is anticipated to adopt a political declaration to renew commitment and accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework until 2030. UNDRR ROAS presented also the progress made so far in submitting the midterm review reports by various Arab countries.

Adopted in 2015, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction is the world's first comprehensive agreement aimed at preventing disasters, reducing the number of deaths, injuries, and impact on people's livelihoods, economic, and social development, and increasing the resilience of communities and countries.
