UNDRR co-led session on innovations for climate risk mapping
Mulungushi Conference Centre (MICC)
This event explores the vital role of climate risk mapping tools in advancing climate adaptation planning. As climate change intensifies, vulnerable communities must be better equipped to respond through effective adaptation strategies.
Risk mapping tools offer a powerful way to identify, visualize, and assess specific climate risks across regions, enabling planners to make informed decisions and prioritize actions. Two tools will be presented and made available to Member States: Firstly, the enhanced Disaster Tracking System (DTS) jointly by UNDRR, UNDP and WMO. The updated system represents a significant improvement in tracking hazardous events and losses and damages, and deepens the understanding of increasingly complex climate and disaster risks. Secondly, UNEP-WCMC’s online platform which models climate impacts within given landscapes and visualizes the potential benefits of nature-based solutions. By integrating data on climate projections, impacts, and socio-economic vulnerabilities at national and local levels, these tools can drive effective adaptation, enhance resilience, and empower communities to better navigate a changing climate.
The session aims to explore innovative approaches to representing and communicating climate risk to strengthen decision-making and adaptation planning as part of a comprehensive risk management (CRM) approach. Participants will gain insights into existing risk mapping tools and the potential for adapting or developing similar tools in their own national contexts.
Target audience: The event will primarily target decision-makers in governments involved in DRR and adaptation planning and implementation, with active participation and insights from experts and practitioners from disaster risk reduction and climate action domains.
