Event Description

This webinar aims to introduce the ISO 37123 – Indicators for Resilient Cities, published in 2019 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 37123 is the first international standard designed to build globally standardized data for city resilience. It is applicable to any city, municipality or local government that undertakes to measure its performance in a comparable and verifiable manner, irrespective of size or location. The availability of ISO standardized metrics for resilience assists cities to prepare for, recover from, and adapt to, shocks and stresses.

The World Council on City Data (WCCD), one of the Core Partners of Making Cities Resilient (MCR2030), was founded in Canada in 2014 and exists to help cities and communities of all sizes globally embrace ISO standardized, independently verified, and globally comparable city data. This data is being used globally to make data driven decisions on management, planning and investment and monitor progress and results. Cities are increasingly confronted by shocks which include extreme natural, or human made events that result in loss of life and injury, material, economic, and/or environmental losses and impacts. To address this urgent need, the WCCD is operationalizing globally ISO 37123 which is a critical part of the WCCD ISO Series on City Data including the base standard ISO 37120 (Indicators for Sustainable Cities and Communities) and ISO 37122 (Indicators for Smart Cities). About the World Council on City Data

The World Council on City Data (WCCD) was founded in Canada in 2014 and exists to help cities and communities of all sizes globally embrace ISO standardized, independently verified, and globally comparable city data to make data driven decisions on management, planning and investment, monitor progress and results, and overall become more sustainable, safe and resilient, prosperous, inclusive and smart. The WCCD team of professionals has led the development and implementation of three international standards on city data that have been published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva – now globally recognized as the ISO 37120 Series on City Data. The ISO 37120 Series includes: ISO 37120 - Indicators for Sustainable Cities, ISO 37122 - Indicators for Smart Cities, and ISO 37123 - Indicators for Resilient Cities. Since its founding, the WCCD has been expanding a global network of cities dedicated to high calibre data. WCCD is now working with 100 cities in 35 countries, helping these cities to become ISO certified. The WCCD and the Council’s City Data Platform now includes over 276 key performance indicators (KPIs) across the ISO 37120 Series that enable a city to determine infrastructure deficits and investment decisions, build accurate baselines and monitor year over year progress, attract foreign direct investment and advance economic development through nationally and globally comparative data and benchmarking, and overall - assess city services and quality of life for residents. WCCD is also a core partner of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative.

About the UNDRR Global Education and Training Institute (UNDRR GETI)

UNDRR GETI was established in 2010 to develop a new cadre of professionals in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation to build disaster resilient societies. GETI has a global mandate to provide capacity building support to mainstream disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into sustainable development; convene and support inter-city learning to strengthen resilience (Making Cities Resilient); and to provide capacity building and best practice sharing support to national training institutions working on resilience issues. Based in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, UNDRR GETI is also the global secretariat of the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030).

About the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030)

Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) is a unique cross-stakeholder initiative for improving local resilience through advocacy, sharing knowledge and experiences, establishing mutually reinforcing city-to-city learning networks, injecting technical expertise, connecting multiple layers of government and building partnerships.

Through delivering a clear 3-stage roadmap to urban resilience, providing tools, access to knowledge, monitoring and reporting tools. MCR2030 will support cities on their journey to reduce risk and build resilience.

MCR2030 aims to ensure cities become inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030, contributing directly to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11) “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”, and other global frameworks including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement and the New Urban Agenda.
