Governments from the world’s most disaster-prone region will meet in Mongolia in July to discuss acceleration of efforts vital for the sustainable future of the region including how to prevent disasters and tackle climate change while reviewing progress in reducing disaster losses.

ULAANBAATAR, 4 August 2017 – UNISDR’s newest Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction has called upon youth leaders from around the world to make a bigger contribution to global efforts towards sustainable and resilient development.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia, H.E. U. Khurelsukh was today recognized as an Asian Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction at the Global Platform in Mexico. H.E. U. Khurelsukh received the award from United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction Mr Robert Glasser for his consistent passion, commitment and achievement on the issue.

The Prime Minister of Mongolia, Mr. Jargaltulgyn Erdenebat, says his country is ready to share its vast experience of managing extreme hazards to support greater implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction across Asia.

Mongolia has pledged to lead by example and inspire countries across Asia to meet the most pressing target of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a global blueprint for tackling natural and human-induced hazards.

Curbing deaths from disasters requires local authorities and other community partners to raise their capacity to manage risks and thereby ensure safe and sustainable development for their citizens. In Mongolia, the government has committed not only to national action but also to fostering cities’ capacity.

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) aim to reduce disaster losses in some of the world’s most hazard prone cities with the initial aid of a €6 million grant from the EU, over the next three years.

Mongolia has launched a new partnership between the public and private sectors to prevent and reduce disaster risks, as the country looks to protect its economic growth and address its changing hazard profile.

The head of UNISDR Margareta Wahlström today met with the Prime Minister of Mongolia, Mr. Chimed Saikhanbileg, as the country embarks on implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the global plan of action adopted in March at the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
