Mexican President Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a global plan to reduce disaster losses adopted last year.
Mexico, as host country, will encourage the 2017 Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction to focus on reducing economic losses from disasters, it emerged today.

The international community today celebrated the first anniversary of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the world’s most comprehensive blueprint for curbing the impact of natural and man-made hazards, with 20 million people taking to social media to mark the occasion.

Representatives of UN Member States were informed today in Geneva that the 5th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction will take place in Cancun, Mexico, in May 2017. It is held every two years and is the largest gathering of its kind. The next Global Platform will focus on implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction which was adopted on this day last year at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

Mexico is forging ahead with implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and investing heavily in resilient infrastructure. A high level delegation is visiting the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva.

GENEVA, September 21, 2015 - The head of UNISDR, Margareta Wahlström, praised Mexico for its commitment to reducing disaster losses and avoiding the creation of new risk, during talks with the government and in a speech to mark the 30th anniversary of the deadly 1985 earthquake on Saturday.

The head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), Margareta Wahlström, will take part tomorrow in the 30th anniversary commemoration of the earthquake which struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985.

Next year’s World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan coincides with the lead-up to the 30th anniversary of the devastating 1985 Mexican earthquake, whose tragic consequences pushed the country into developing one of the world’s most effective disaster prevention and response systems.
