Central Asia DRR Initiative
The Western Balkans Disaster Risk Reduction Initiative aims to enhance disaster and climate resilience in Albania, North Macedonia, and Serbia. This work is implemented by UNDRR and kindly supported by the government of Italy. By strengthening risk knowledge, governance, early warning systems, and transboundary collaboration, this three-year initiative (July 2025 – July 2028) seeks to protect lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure across the region.
Our goal is to build a safer, more resilient Western Balkans by:
- Improving risk knowledge and data sharing
- Supporting financial investments to be risk informed
- Enhancing risk governance and decision-making
- Developing Early Warning Systems (EWS) that save lives
- Promoting transboundary cooperation to manage shared risks
This initiative brings together, national disaster management authorities, local governments, civil society organizations, and technical experts as well as regional organizations, UN agencies and development partners and DRR champions across the Western Balkans.
Throughout, we will build on the tools, recommendations and campaigns offered by UNDRR in support of accelerating implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
