Overview

UNDRR’s New York Liaison Office (NYLO) provides policy advice and support to UN Member and Observer States and other stakeholders, supports the Office of the Secretary-General, and closely works with UN system partners to advance disaster risk reduction and Sendai Framework  implementation. 

The NYLO promotes policy coherence across disaster risk reduction, climate action, sustainable development, and financing for development through intergovernmental deliberations and policy decisions taken at the General Assembly and ECOSOC.  

This includes promoting DRR integration and coherence with the Sendai Framework in the implementation of major intergovernmental agreements, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Istanbul Programme of Action for Least Developed Countries, the Vienna Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries and the Samoa Pathway for Small Island Developing States, to ensure their implementation benefits from and contributes to reducing disaster risk.

The United Nations has awarded the United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction to the Global Fire Monitoring Centre (GFMC), Fire Ecology Research Group, Max Planck Institute of Freiburg University, Germany, for its outstanding work in the field of wildfire prevention.

Tsunamis may be rare events along the French coasts but they do occur. The French tsunami alert centre, CENALT, has already provided more than 24 tsunami information alerts and issued 3 tsunamis advisory warning messages since the beginning of its operations in 2012.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Reduction, Margareta Wahlström, and Luxembourg’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Marie-Josée Jacobs, today signed a four-year Cooperation Agreement.
UNISDR Regional Office for Arab States is looking for a consultant "on-site" with expertise in information management and advocacy actions. this assignment is based in UNISDR Cairo office with focus on strengthening information management on disaster risk reduction trends, news, contacts and developments in the Arab Region.
